Florita “Nang Flor” Caya, was one of the women who was given tribute. The efforts to include her in this list was made by Sabine Pallas, our friend from the International Land Coalition (ILC). We are thankful to her for the work she had done on this. This is for Nang Flor, and for the other women leaders who have died in the struggle. And this is for ourselves too, so that we may continue to be inspired by their bravery in the pursuit of their human rights. It was timely as it was done when PAKISAMA was commemorating the first year of Nang Flor’s death. Sadly, the killers are still on the loose, and this has reminded us to follow-up the investigation that was started by the Commision on Human Rights .
Dear AFA friends.
Key successfactors for women farmers empowerment is education, skills development, local enterprise development, organisation and participation in local governance. If local government by law includes 30% plus women representatives and funds are made available, then a multiplier factor of women empowerment fans out all over the nation. Women as rural entrepreneurs as leaders of women associations need training. Yet due to lack of inclusive legislation, lack of political will, lack of hard push, lack of commitment to take risks within and by development agencies, lack of honesty real practical solidarity with poor rural women we keep mainly talking and talking. As an insider I regret having been unable to bring about real change within my own organisation beset by career people. Yet I am convinced that rural women empowerment is very much feasible having demonstrated this in my work through policy dialogue and capacity building projects and publication of how to do tools. I thank AFA and many other Asian associations of women farmers/rural entrepeneurs/cooperators for their efforts to improve daily lives of women rural poor.
