Representatives from Land Matrix partner organizations from Bangladesh, Nepal, Cambodia, and Myanmar participated in the two-day “Land Matrix Training Workshop on Data Management” at the Partnership Center, Quezon City, Philippines on 16-17 October 2019 and on 4-5 November for partners in Indonesia.

The objective of the workshop is to train the participants from different partner organizations in data management using the Land Matrix Database. Specifically, the workshop is aimed at:

  1. Introducing the participants on the Land Matrix Database
  2. Orienting the participants on the online platform of Land Matrix and to the data parameters that it uses
  3. Conducting hands-on training on data entry and editing on the Land Matrix Database
  4. Training the participants on data gathering techniques relevant to LM
  5. Training the participants on Data analysis using the LM database
  6. Conducting a peer learning activity on data presentation and other communication methods of each organization

Under the priority program of AFA on the rights of family farmers to natural resources and as the regional focal point of the Land Matrix Initiative in Asia, we have partnered with the members of AFA (AFFM and API) and with our friends from the ILC (AFA and ALRD, CSRC and STAR Kampuchea) to strengthen each members evidence-based advocacy through Land Matrix. The main objective of the partnership is to gather relevant information on Large-Scale Acquisition that would be used to give evidence on the advocacy of each partner. In order to sharpen the capability of each partner and to increase their knowledge in Land Matrix and in its online platform, a training workshop was conducted last October 15 to 16 and November 3 to 4, 2019.

The first training workshop was conducted with the partners from AFFM, ALRD, CSRC, and Star Kampuchea while the second was with API. The main objective of the workshop is to introduce and orient the partners the Land Matrix Database including its online platform and the data parameters it uses, have a hands-on training on data entry and editing on the Land Matrix database, equip them on data gathering and analysis and have a peer-to-peer learning in the different communication methods that each organization uses.

Three methods were used to conduct the training; an interactive lecture, hands-on and peer-to-peer. Orienting the data parameters and data editing guidelines was done through a lecture while continuously gathering the feedback and experiences of the participants in order to fully feed into the participants how each parameter is interpreted when it is used in the database, it is important that there is only one understanding of what it means so that it can be used as a valid tool for research and evidence-based advocacies. The hands-on training was used for the participants to have a direct application of what they have learned on the lectures, this also ensures that they have understood what was taught and they have a chance to clarify any points in the application that are not clear to them. Each participant also had a chance to share the communication strategy that they use in their own campaign, AFA through its knowledge management officer shared the different methods and tips used in the publications and materials produced.

The training workshop was a success as each participant was able to correctly add a new deal in the online platform of Land Matrix. After the training, each participating organization has their own target number of new land deals that they will add to the database and existing deals that they would be updating. All partnerships will end by the second week of December 2019.
