Background:

The United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS) Global Summit Dialogue on Farmers, Fishers, Pastoralists and Other Producers will be co-convened by Dr. Agnes Kalibata, UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy to the Food Systems Summit, together with the World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO), Pan-African Farmers’ Organization (PAFO), Southern African Confederation of Agricultural Unions (SACAU), Asian Farmers’ Association for Sustainable Rural Development (AFA), and Bharat Krishak Samaj (Farmers’ Forum India). It will be curated by Dr. David Nabaro and aims to consolidate and strengthen producers’ voices and commitments for food systems transformation through a multi-stakeholder consultation process.

Building upon the outcomes of a series of producer-led independent dialogues, this Global Dialogue will build upon the outcomes of a series of producer-led independent dialogues and will examine the challenges, contributions, responsibilities and expectations of farmers, fishers, pastoralists and others in transforming our food systems with regards to nutrition, climate, biodiversity, livelihoods, resilience and other areas. The outcomes of this Global Dialogue will contribute to the UN Food Systems Summit to advance the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Approach

The Dialogue will follow the Summit Dialogues’ standardized approach to convening, curating and facilitating structured conversations among groups with different perspectives on how to advance food system transformation for the common good. The heart of a dialogue are the discussion groups, where a diverse set of individuals exchange views on a pre-defined “discussion topic” that offers a potential pathway towards future food systems transformation.

All participants engage as “equals”, under “Chatham House” rules. The event is carefully curated and facilitated to enable an exchange of views at the working and expert level, including points of divergence. The aim is not necessarily to arrive at consensus, but the process of exchanging perspectives can facilitate an evolution in different stakeholders’ views. Participants are invited to take part in a technical discussion, and not present a national position.

Participants

To allow interactive and substantive discussion, the number of participants will be limited to 100-120 participants maximum, who will be allocated to groups of 20-24 individuals with diverse profiles.

The participants will include:

  • Farmers, fishers, pastoralists, and other producers in all their diversity in terms of sector, size, geography, age and gender.
  • Member State representatives from relevant ministries such as agriculture, rural development, environment, health, planning and others.
  • Academic and research institutions, and civil society organizations.
  • Private sector representatives (including financial institutions) in food systems.
