AFA Secretary General Esther Penunia was invited to a globally televised debate entitled “Failing the Farmers”, which was produced by TVE for BBC World in cooperation with IFAD last March 31 in London. She joined a panel of fourteen international panelists in considering the most salient issues confronting small farmers today.

Hosted by Nik Gowing, the panel included Kevin Cleaver, Assistant President, IFAD; Pedro Sanchez, Director of Tropical Agriculture, Earth Institute, Columbia University; Paul Nicholson, European co–ordintor, La Via Campesina; Makanjuola Olaseinde Arigbede Union of Small and Medium Scale Farmers of Nigeria; Simeon Greene Relationship Director, Windward Banana Development; Peter Robbins, Ex-commodities trader, author and activist; Duncan Green, Head of Policy, Oxfam; Norah Olembo Executive Director, Africa Biotech Stakeholders Forum; Andrew Bennett Biotechnology Marketing Lead, Europe-Africa, Monsanto; Crawford Falconer Agriculture Chairman, World Trade Organization (WTO); Louise Fresco Professor, Sustainable Development, University of Amsterdam; Catherine Kainja Kaluluma, Minister for Education, Government of Malawi; and, Anthony Gooch Head, Media and Public Diplomacy, European Commission.
