AFA Secretary General Esther Penunia attends the “Policy Forum on Development (PFD) – Asia Regional Meeting” held on 24-25 September 2019 in Kathmandu, Nepal. Penunia, representing farmers organizations, provided comments to highlight family farmers as solution providers and actors for SDG implementation and that their work should be supported.

The meeting is mainly centered upon the shared common synergies between the 2030 Agenda and the ASEAN Vision 2025: both the Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) and the ASEAN Vision 2025 address key issues in fight against poverty and food insecurity, climate change and environmental degradation, gender inequality and, amongst others, unsustainable production and consumption. This meeting is especially relevant as there is a perceived increase in civil society and local authorities cooperation at local levels, as well as increased commitment to gender equality and youth economic engagement.

The conference ended with a declaration approved, outlining recommendations for EU to support local authorities and CSOs in accelerating implementation of SDGs in the region.

The PFD is a multi-stakeholder platform launched and supported by the European Commission where civil society organisations, associations of local authorities and the private sector together with EU Members States and Institutions meet to debate on development matters. PFD organises regional events and annual global meetings. The last Asian meeting was organised in 2015 in Bangkok.
