The people of Myanmar celebrated Peasant’s Day “Taungthu lèthama nei” in Yangon on 2 March 2018 with the theme “Achieving Sustainable Development through Modernizing the Agriculture System.”
Several dignitaries from the Parliament, Regional level Labour officials, NGOs, INGOs, ILO, FES, Solidarity Center and CTUM affiliates sectors (IWFM, BWFM, MWFM, MTLTUF, PSI, EWFM) supported the event with their presence.
Peasants’ Day is a public holiday in Myanmar (formerly Burma) celebrated yearly every 2nd of March. Incidentally, it is falls on the day General Ne Win seized power in 1963. On this day, Myanmar’s local leaders organize talks about reforms in peasantry around the country and present issues that challenges the development of the agricultural field.
Agriculture and Farmers Federation of Myanmar (AFFM), a member of AFA, celebrated Peasant’s Day for the first time with more than 4,000 people attending from different regions and states utilizing the football field in the Industrial Zone (2) in Hlaing Tharyar Township, Yangon Region.
The event was celebrated with the farmers holding banners saying what they want people to know including policy on protecting land rights of small scale farmers. AFFM distributed pamphlets and policy book on farmland law to the attendees.
During this event, the farmers performed culture dances and other forms of entertainment. The farmers also brought their local products and exhibited them in the booths. Other companies dealing in agricultural tools, fertilizer, insecticides, pesticides, and seed galleries participated and displayed their products as well.
