The “Regional Consultation Workshop on Farmers’ Situation: Responding to Major Difficulties Faced by Farmers in Asia” was held last June 12-14, 2007 at the SEAMEO Innotech Center, Commonwealth Avenue, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City, Philippines, hosted by PAKISAMA.

During this event, a forum dialogue on WTO, ASEAN Charter, and EU-ASEAN FTA concerns was held. About 30 participants from Philippine-based POs and NGOs joined the forum. Jerome Bunyi, WTO Affairs, Policy Research Service of the Philippines’ Department of Agriculture, gave an update on the WTO Doha Round of Talks, with particular focus on Agriculture Special Products & SSM. Jason Anasarias, Assistant Director, ASEAN Affairs, Department of Foreign Affairs, Philippines, gave updates on the ASEAN Charter. Frances TC. Lo, 11.11.11 Pilipinas, gave updates on EU-ASEAN FTA.

Another activity held was the field visit to the area of the Samahan ng mga Magsasaka sa Bundok ng Antipolo (SAMBA), a local farmer organization belonging to PAKISAMA, in Sitio Nagpatong, Barangay San Jose, Antipolo City. Because of the field visit, the SAMBA members were encouraged to make improvements with their Training Center up on a hill.

It was attended by 19 participants from 7 farmer organizations who are members of AFA (12 males, 7 females). The Food and Fertilizer Technology Center (FFTC), an international organization, also joined the event.
The consultation-workshop aimed to allow leaders of AFA member organizations to (1) share the over-all farmer’s situation in their countries, focusing on two major difficulties that they face; (2) understand better the issues of farmers from other countries; and (3) come up with concrete on-ground action plans that respond to the difficulties shared by the farmers.
