AFA attended the EU-ASEAN Strategy Meeting organized by the Asia-Europe People’s Forum last Feburary 7-8 in Sasa International House, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand.

AFA got updated about EU’s and ASEAN’s framework in the FTA negotiation, got involved in planning for a campaign on EU-ASEAN FTA, and signed a statement expressing concern on transparency, addressed to EU.

One of the issues that AFA works on is free trade agreements, and one of the key target intergovernmental body is ASEAN

AFA and its strategic partner AsiaDHRRA has collaborated with other organizations for a campaign on EU-ASEAN RTA, with the two organizations focusing on the agricultural aspect of the issue

CSOs believe that the reason why EU wants to enter into a regional trade agreement with ASEAN is to strengthen EU economic presence in Asia, which is dominated currently by US, and East Asia countries like Japan and South Korea, secure market access for EU investments, and secure economic domination in Asia as part of the EU’s agenda to become the most competitive economy in the world.
