RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – The Asian Farmers’ Association for Sustainable Development (AFA) is participating in the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) being held here on June 16-22, 2012.
It is the first time that AFA has visited Brazil and Latin AmRerica, where it has a partner regional farmers’ organization called COPROFAM (“International Confederation of Organizations of Family Farmers of the Extended Mercosur”).
COPROFAM has 12 member organizations in seven countries including CONTAG (“National Confederation of Agricultural Workers”) in Brazil.
CONTAG is hosting the AFA delegates together with the Pan Africa FarmersOrganizations (PAFFO).
AFA delegates will have access to the Agriculture and Rural Development Day (ARDD) on June 18, for the one day meetings focused on agriculture, the Sustainability Development Dialogues organized by the Brazil government on June 16-19 in Rio Centro, and the People’s Summit (Cupula dos Povos na Rio+20) organized mainly by the CSOs in Flamengo on June 15-23.
AFA will join meetings and sessions that it co-organized or where it has been invited to speak or where the session is about sustainable smallholder and family agriculture where its presence as advocates is needed.
The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) is supporting the participation of the three regional farmers’ organizations in Rio+20.
AFA also got support from Agriterra, the World Society for Protection of Animals (WSPA), and the Brazilian government.
