Bangkok, Thailand – The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) held the 29th Regional Conference for Asia and The Pacific (FAORAP Conference) last March 26-31, in Bangkok, Thailand. Around 150 delegates from 33 countries participated in the conference.

AFA participated as an observer in this conference, represented by its Chairperson, Ms. Sudaporn Sittisathapornkul and Secretary General, Esther Penunia.

Observers from nine NGOs have joined efforts to make valuable interventions and come up with one common statement. Besides AFA, these include Action Aid, AsiaDHRRA, East Asia Working Group, Focus on the Global South, Pesticide Action Network in Asia and the Pacific (PAN AP), Philippine NGO Coalition for Food Sovereignty (PNLS Phils), Southeast Asian Council for Food Security and Fair Trade (SEACON), and Third World Network (TWN).

The summary of this common statement was presented by Ms. Esther Penunia of AFA during the Ministerial Meeting last March 30.

The next FAORAP conference will be held on May 2010. The delegation from South Korea expressed its intention to host this next meeting.

The topics discussed during this conference were: (1) policies, strategies and technical options for coping with water scarcity; (2) agribusiness and competitive agro industries in the context of globalization and free trade; (3) aid for trade initiative and the role of FAO; (4) regional state of food and agriculture; (5) food safety and trade; and (6) trans-boundary animal disease.
