AFA participated in the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific’s (UNEP-ESCAP) Regional Implementation Meeting (RIM) ) for the 16th session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) held last November 26-27, 2007 at Hotel Borubudur in Jakarta, Indonesia.
This meeting was held in Jakarta, Indonesia last November 26-27. The CSD was created in December 1992 to ensure follow up of outcomes from the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janairo, Brazil. Each two year cycle is separated into a review and policy year. For the 2008-2009 cycles, there will be CSD 16 (2008 review year) and then CSD 17 (2009 by CSD 16/17 09, policy year). The themes to be addressed by CSD 16/17 will be agriculture, rural development, land, desertification, and drought, along with “Africa”.
This RIM would like to ensure that the issues of importance and which are unique to Asia and the Pacific are highlighted in the 16th and 17th sessions of the CSD. The outcome of this RIM will be delivered to the CSD via a report on the meeting outcomes and a Chairperson’s Summary.
Official delegates from 17 countries and about 20 NGOs attended this RIM. Among the farmer groups, IFOAM, IFAP and AFA were represented. The farmers’ groups issued a Farmers’ Statement during this RIM
