The Executive Committee of AFA decided to put up its own secretariat office in Manila last July 23, 2007.
The decision marked the end of a process of autonomy which began in 2002, facilitated by its NGO partner and catalyst, AsiaDHRRA. It signalled the readiness of AFA leaders to take on bigger responsibilities in organizational management, international advocacy and solidarity work. AsiaDHRRA performed secretariat services to AFA until June 2006.
Four staff member were directly hired by AFA – the Secretary General, Project Officer for Operations, Finance Officer, Technical Assistant, and Accountant/Administrative Officer. The Secretary General and Project Officer for Operations were formerly AsiaDHRRA staff devoted to full-time AFA work.
Organizational systems such as management of human resources, finances, office, program and projects, as well as strategies for resource sustainability and membership expansion were designed and put in place since late 2006, in preparation for eventual secretariat autonomy. AFA will also be working based on its current Peasant Agenda and Strategic Plan.
An office blessing was held last September 7 to mark the setting up of the new office, which was attended by other tenants in the building where the AFA office is located.
