Following the 21st AFA Execom meeting in Bangkok, Thailand last December 22, 2007, AFA announced that it will hold its third general assembly in Korea on February 28 to March 3, 2008, to be hosted by the Korean Advanced Farmers’ Federation (KAFF).
February 28 will be the celebration of AFA Day with a field visit to a community properly responding to challenges of climate change and/or China’s agricultural development.
February 29 to March 2 will be the consultation-workshop on the theme “China’s Development, Climate Change and Asian Farmers’ Realities: Old Problems, New Challenges for Farmers’ Organizations in Asia” with the following objectives: (1) Describe the developments of China’s agriculture and the emerging issues that it pose to small scale farmers and fishers in Asia; (2) Describe the causes of climate change and the extent of its impact on small scale farmers in the region; (3) Describe the organizations initiatives and limitations in responding to the challenges posed by China’s agricultural development and climate change; (4) Identify action points to mitigate or prevent serious negative impact of these issues to small scale producers; and, (5) Put forward proposals and recommendations to international NGOs and inter-governmental decision-making bodies.
March 3 will be the General Assembly itself with the following objectives: (1) Describe the achievements of AFA for the year 2006-2007; (2) Plot major thrusts and activities for the year 2008-2009, vis-à-vis the AFA 2006-2010 strategic plan; (3) Affirm the status of membership in AFA; and, (4) Select the new set of ExeCom members for 2008-2010.
