HA NOI — As early as two o’clock in the morning, vegetable sellers in Dong Du Commune of Gia Lam District in the capital city of Ha Noi start their busy day’s work. They collect vegetables from farmers to take to wholesale markets, from where containers can be filled to be exported to countries in the EU and North America.
After the intense negotiations - and protests - at Hong Kong, the WTO claims a global trade deal is still possible by the end of this year. Head of Panos London’s globalisation programme, Jon Barnes, analyses the issues at stake and looks at the dynamics of the trade body.
I. WHAT HAPPENED IN HONG KONG? The 6th WTO Ministerial Conference, held in Hong Kong 13-18 December 2005, ended with an agreed Ministerial Declaration. WTO Director-General, Pascal Lamy, and a number of WTO members celebrated the moment as an important step towards the completion of the Doha Round of trade negotiations. Expectations had steadily been ratcheted down before the conference and there were few surprises in the final outcome.
