As part of the Decade of Action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, UN Secretary-General Anto?nio Guterres will convene a Food Systems Summit in September 2021. The Summit endeavors to awaken the world to the fact that we all must work together to transform the way the world produces, consumes, and thinks about food. It is a summit for everyone everywhere – a people’s summit. It is also a solutions summit that will require everyone to take action to transform the world’s food systems.

In preparation for the Summit, the UN Special Envoy for the Food Systems Summit Dr. Agnes Kalibata has invited all sectors of society to share their perspectives and solutions. These Dialogues will obtain input from a global audience (from youth activists to indigenous leaders, from smallholder farmers to scientists and CEOs) both before and after the Summit with the aim to transform the way the world produces, consumes, and disposes of food.

It is already known that eighty percent of food in the world comes from family farms, thereby, they can greatly support the transformation of food systems. The empowerment of family farmers and their organizations is vital in the transition toward just, sustainable, healthier, and inclusive food systems.

Thus, AFA, INOFO, WFO, and PIFON are organizing an independent dialogue series from happening from 7 to 11 June 2021. The independent dialogue series aims to:

1. Raise farmer awareness and elevate public discussion about how reforming our food systems can help us all to achieve the SDGs by implementing reforms that are good for people and planet.

2. Highlight our solutions and key messages to:

  • effectively implement VGGSF and build capacities of small fishers, highlighting the roles, contributions, solutions, initiatives of women and youth small scale producers and fishers;
  • promote local traditional crops and local diets to ensure food security and nutrition
  • adapt to climate change through different sustainable adaptation systems, especially agro ecology, organic agriculture, the use of resilient crops and by strengthening the local knowledge and capacities of small-scale producers in producing local crops and promoting local, domestic markets
  • strengthen family farming organizations and effectively implementing multi stakeholder UNDFF processes guided by UNDROP
  • increase market power of family farmers/fishers

3. Generate pro-farmer policy recommendations and significant action and measurable progress towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by identifying solutions and leaders, and issuing a call for action at all levels of the food system, including national and local governments and development partners.

4. Agree on a system of follow-up and review to ensure that the recommendations generated at the independent dialogue are considered in the various action tracks towards new actions and progress.
