Ka Jingtah Shyriew (Yam Dish)

This dish, featuring yam as its primary ingredient alongside an assortment of other vegetables and indigenous spices, holds a special place in the culinary heritage of Meghalaya, India. Among the people of Meghalaya, yam isn’t just a main course but also a favored snack enjoyed by individuals of all ages. Its widespread appeal is attributed to its health benefits, making it a beloved choice for children and the elderly.
Ingredients:
- Yam, 1 kilogram
- Banana flower, fresh, 200 grams
- Szechuan pepper leaves, chopped, 9 to 10 pieces
- Turmeric, ½ teaspoon
- Chili flakes, ½ teaspoon
- Bamboo shoots, dry, 50 grams
- Salt, 1 teaspoon
- Soya beans, boiled, 50 grams
- Garlic, ground, 2 teaspoon
- Dry fish, small, 125 grams
- Black sesame, ground,125 grams
Instructions:
- Make a fire and boil the 500 ml of water in a pan.
- Add the boiling water the garlic chili flakes, turmeric, black sesame, and salt.
- Once all of the above ingredients are boiled together, add the cut yam into it.
- Add banana flowers and boiled soybeans.
- After 15 minutes, when the yam is half cooked, add the dry bamboo shoots, dry fish, and chopped Szechuan pepper leaf. Wait for another 15 minutes until the dish is fully cooked and ready to serve.
