The Lao Farmers Association (LFA) launched an initiative to empower persons with disabilities (PWDs) by providing opportunities in agricultural business. The project aims to create jobs for disabled individuals and build the capacity of 15 families with PWD members.
The initiative was carried out in partnership with the Saysetha District Disabled People’s Association and is implemented in Vientiane Capital. It follows a structured approach with four key steps:
- Selecting Target Families – A project outreach meeting was held to inform potential beneficiaries about the initiative’s objectives and conditions. Awareness was also raised through Facebook promotions. After this, 15 families were selected to participate.
- Market Survey and Business Needs Assessment – The Lao Farmers Association organized market survey training, study tours, and knowledge exchange sessions with successful farming groups. This step helped identify viable agricultural businesses, including crop cultivation, livestock raising, and food processing.
- Business Planning and Financial Management – Participants received training on developing business plans, production planning, and maintaining financial records to track income and expenses effectively.
- Agricultural Training – Beneficiaries were trained in agricultural techniques tailored to their chosen business plans. One key training focused on raising pigeons as a source of livelihood.
Through this initiative, individuals who previously struggled to find employment are now engaged in various agricultural activities, including livestock raising, crop cultivation, and mushroom farming. The project has provided them with a sustainable source of income and also boosted their confidence and mental well-being. People with disabilities, who once faced challenges in securing employment, now have meaningful work and have the ability to support themselves, which demonstrates that people with disabilities can succeed in the same jobs as those without disabilities.
Supported by the APFP-FO4A program alongside other projects implemented by LFA, this initiative is a step towards inclusivity in agriculture, empowering individuals with disabilities to become self-reliant and financially independent.
APFP-FO4A is implemented by the consortium Asian Farmers’ Association for Sustainable Rural Development (AFA) and La Via Campesina (LVC) and funded by the European Union and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). LFA serves as the national implementing agency of APFP-FO4A in Laos.
In this video, beneficiaries share their experiences and the positive impact this initiative has had on their lives.
