Than Than Aye knows how to make bamboo shoots which she learned as a child. She uses this knowledge to earn income to support her family.
Bamboo shoots is a popular dish among the local people and it is included as a side dish on dinner tables in most Myanmar households.
In 2019, she saw a market demand for bamboo shoots near her village. This gave her the idea of doing business selling salted or preserved bamboo shoots. Her village is located near the forest and the bamboo shoots thrive during the monsoon/rainy season from June to September. She bought bamboo shoots from the sellers in her village as well as from the other villages, paying MMK 400 per viss (1 viss = 1.6 kilograms).
She started her business of making salted bamboo shoots with 1000 viss of shoots. These are to be sold in the summer when bamboo shoots are no longer in season. This way, her product will fetch a very good price.
