I am Daniel Ligmon from Sumilao, Bukidnon, Philippines.
In 2008, my mother joined the “WALK for LAND, WALK for JUSTICE”, a movement lead by Sumilao farmers with the goal is to obtain the 144 hectares of land that San Miguel Corporation planned to turn into a piggery farm. The farmers who joined the movement walked from Sumilao to Manila, and 60 days went by with them not being able to eat well and drink enough water, but they persisted. And they succeeded. They were able to take back their land and have enriched it through the years. Their sacrifices motivated me to pursue a career in agriculture. I want to continue what my parents have started.
NO FARMERS, NO FOOD, NO FUTURE. Young farmers, like myself, play an important role in our country. We are the ones who will ensure that food will be available in the future. Many young people do not want to be farmers because of the lack of government support for the agriculture sector.
That is why I am appealing to our policymakers to push the Magna Carta of Young Farmers to encourage young people to pursue farming. If this is passed and implemented, it will greatly help us achieve a future where food is no longer a problem.
