Surigao del Sur, Philippines — A new aroma fills the air in Tagbina, Surigao del Sur as the Progressive Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Multi-Purpose Cooperative (PARBEMCO) Youth Committee officially opened ParbemCafé on December 11, 2024.

Through the AFA SPADe Project—Empowering Women and Youth in Cooperatives—the Asian Farmers’ Association for Sustainable Rural Development (AFA) supported PARBEMCO’s young entrepreneurs with a high-quality coffee machine, tools, equipment, and training to strengthen their business skills.

Known as the coffee capital of Surigao del Sur, Tagbina has long been a hub for coffee growers, yet many family farmers have yet to fully benefit from the growing demand for coffee. The café seeks to change that by giving young farmers and local youth the opportunity to manage their own enterprise—serving freshly brewed drinks and marketing ParbemCoffee, made from beans grown in their own communities.

The café’s launch was made possible through collaboration among PARBEMCO, AFA, AgriCOOPh Federation, and the Tagbina Local Government Unit, under the SPADe Project spearheaded by GIZ and implemented within the Mindanao Peace and Development Programme (MinPAD RISE), funded by the European Union.
