Co–organized by Asian Farmers Association for Sustainable Rural Development (AFA)UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)Collectif Strategies Alimentairies (CSA)Agricord
BACKGROUND
The World Agriculture Watch (WAW) is an international initiative of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Government of France and the French Agricultural Research and International Cooperation Center (CIRAD).
As a platform supporting national observatory projects or preliminary works, WAW has been working in around 10 countries since 2011 to strengthen the capacity of partners to monitor and analyze agricultural and rural transformations (i.e. typology of farms and rural households), and foster the adoption of resulting policies that reduce rural poverty. The evidence-based information is crucial for improving policy design, targeting and focus.
WAW’s portfolio of products and services includes: a common international methodological framework and technical assistance based on multi-stakeholder participatory principles; a policy dialogue facilitation process among stakeholders involved at the national and regional levels; an international platform to raise awareness on farming diversity and rural transformations.
AgriCord has decided to collaborate with WAW in order to better integrate the Farmers Organizations (FOs) in the process of setting up and reinforcing a monitoring systems based on farms’ typology to better understand the diversity of farm systems and adopt targeted policies.
There are several stakes associated to this better integration of FOs:
- Contribute to more inclusive policy making processes at national level, with a stronger support of FAO and other agencies such as IFAD to the policy making processes that include FOs and civil society;
- Strengthen the FOs capacities to engage in policy dialogue with authorities, thanks to a better understanding of their members’ needs and a better arguments through evidence-based and validated data;
- Produce more relevant data and knowledge on family farms, their economic and social weight and a better understanding of their needs when it comes to investment in agricultural activities. When investing today you shape the future of agriculture.
AFA has decided to collaborate with AGricord and WAW as WAW can help farmers organization produce more relevant data and knowledge on family farms, and provide more evidence and validated data for the policy advocacy work at national and regional levels. Currently, one of its member organizations, Vietnam Farmers
Union (VNFU), is an implementing FO partner of WAW Vietnam. PAKISAMA, AFA member in Philippines has bilaterally collaborated with CSA for the conduct of a national workshop on WAW for its members , which was held this November 29 in Manila Philippines.
