RATIONALE & OBJECTIVES
The United Nations declared last December 2017, the years 2019-2019 as the “International Decade on Family Farming” This Decade aims to serve as a framework to promote better public policies on Family Farming. It offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the achievement of SDG 1 (ending poverty) and SDG2 (ending hunger, promoting food security, nutrition and sustainable agriculture).
As a member of the World Rural Forum who spearheaded the campaign, AFA is a key player in the Asia region in the advocacy towards the Decade on Family Farming. Now that it has been declared, we would like to shape the Decade such that it will really be of benefit to family farmers worldwide, 70% of which are in the Asia region.
The objective of this workshop is to reflect, discuss and agree on the main priorities and actions that AFA member organizations will take in their respective countries in particular and in the Asia region in general towards the full maximization of the potentials that the International Decade on Family Farming. For that, this workshop aims to agree on a baseline document with concrete proposals for its implementation in Asia as well a draft of policy advocacy demands for the amelioration of family farming in Asia. Discussions will touch upon the following five point agenda of AFA: (1) rights to natural resources-land, water, forests, seeds; (2) sustainable, resilient agriculture; (3) farmers cooperatives and their enterprises; (4) women empowerment; and (5) attracting the youth to agriculture.
