HONG KONG immigration authorities on Thursday detained three Filipino activists at the Chek Lap Kok airport as part of what protesters believe are heightened security measures in the run-up to the sixth Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization next week.

Dr. Carol Araullo, chairperson of the Bagong Alyansa Makabayan, Elisa Lubi of the militant women’s group Gabriela, and Norma Biñas, vice president for international affairs of the labor group Kilusang May Uno were questioned by immigration officials on their “WTO-related activities.”

They took an 8 a.m. flight to Hong Kong from Manila, but were kept in a holding area as soon as they passed Immigration around 10:40 a.m., Bayan secretary general Renato Reyes Jr. said.

Reyes said Immigration officials went through the women’s luggage and interrogated them on their purpose in going to Hong Kong.

The Filipinos were released at 4 p.m.
