The Asian Farmers Association for Sustainable Rural Development (AFA) will be conducting an in-person training to capacitate its country data partners for the Land Matrix Initiative (LMI). The training, which includes participants from Farmer and Nature Net (Cambodia), Aliansi Petani Indonesia (Indonesia), and Pambansang Kilusan ng mga Samahang Magsasaka (Philippines), will take place on 12-14 March 2024, at the Hive Hotel in Quezon City, Philippines. The primary goal of the training is to equip participants with essential skills in Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information System (GIS) for effective land rights advocacy.

The training will cover various topics, including the Land Matrix Initiative (LMI) platform, strategies for data sourcing from online research, deal editing and research, basics of remote sensing, and basics of geospatial information systems and mapping techniques.

The objectives of the training are to provide participants with practical skills tailored for land rights advocacy. This includes enabling them to effectively use GIS and RS to map land ownership and monitor land use changes. Additionally, the program aims to support policy advocacy by teaching participants how to visualize and analyze data on land tenure and resource distribution. The training will also familiarize participants with the Land Matrix Platform, helping them document instances of large-scale land acquisitions and disputes, and enhance their understanding of the impacts of land acquisitions and disputes on vulnerable groups.

The Land Matrix Initiative (LMI) is a global and independent initiative that collects and analyzes data on large-scale land acquisitions and land deals. AFA is hosting the Regional Focal Point in Asia, which focuses on empowering farmers and communities in the region to advocate for their land rights and address land conflicts.
