There were three successive conferences organized by CSOs prior to the ASEAN Summit, all hoping to make inputs to the official Summit. AFA attended all three major conferences: 6th ASEAN People’s Assembly (APA), ASEAN Civil Society Conference (ACSC) 2007 and ASEAN Civil Society Conference (ACSC) 3. Due to its active participation, AFA became visible and farmers’ issues were discussed during plenary and panel sessions. Through these conferences, linkages and contacts widened to include fishers sector, Indigenous People’s sector, as well as formal and informal labor sector. One major action point identified was the need to build a constituency of farmers, fishers and IPs that will engage ASEAN on agriculture and human rights – including economic and social rights. There is also a need to further intensify the projection of farmers’ issues and concerns and proposals in CSO gatherings on ASEAN.
