The DGRV (German Cooperative and Raiffesen Confederation), the national apex organization and top-level auditing confederation of the cooperative sector in Germany, and the AFA (Asian Farmers Association for Sustainable Rural Development), jointly conducted a three-day virtual training on Cooperative Governance, held last July 27-29, 2022, with 15 participants (7 females), from 11 members and national partner FOs of AFA in 9 countries.
The training is the first of two trainings to be conducted this year by DGRV and AFA, aimed at training leaders of farmer organizations in selected countries on key topics related to governance and management. The trained leaders will act as trainers and resource persons for the members of their respective farmer organizations/cooperatives.
The recently concluded training focused on the system of mechanisms, processes, and interactions designed to control and manage the cooperative. The Principles and Concepts of the separation of ownership and management of cooperatives, as well as the different roles and responsibilities of governing bodies such as the General Assembly, Board of Directors, Controller, and financial policies and risk management, were tackled.
The virtual training used several virtual interactive tools and exercises to re-enforce the understanding of the concepts that were discussed, which were appreciated by the participants, though some suggested in-person training. All participants committed to sharing with other FO leaders what they learned.
The AFA and DGRV team will provide a guide to the participants to strengthen their ability to share what they have learned and incorporate these into their current learning materials on cooperatives.
