Farmer and Nature Net (FNN) organized its 5th GA last March 21, 2008 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, with support from FNF and CEDAC. It was highlighted by the members’ election of the national committees through a new process that started from the grassroots level up to the national level.
There were 65 participants (17 of whom are women) coming from 14 provinces of Cambodia. The participants were provincial committee members elected during provincial assemblies held in February and March 2008, 4 national networks under the umbrella organization of FNN, old committee members of FNN, and representative of FNF, and the president and staff of CEDAC.
The GA aimed to: (1) sum up the activities, results, and financial report of FNN in 2007 and its accomplishments visa-avis its mandate; (2) analyze the role of FOs in supporting members; (3) present FNN’s thrusts for 2008; and, (4) restructured and get a fresh mandate for the FNN committees through an election.
During the assembly, the progress of activities and financial report in 2007 were presented with some questions and answers from participants in order to deepen their understanding of FNN.
The role of FOs and FO network were also discussed and analyzed through key questions as: (a) How did FNN help its members?; (b) What benefits accrued to the farmers?; (c) What are the demands of farmers?; and, (4) What role should FNN play in serving or protecting farmers’ rights?.
FNN’s election of leaders followed a clear process and procedure. First was the presentation of FNN new structure. Then it was followed by the election of 14 representatives from the provinces and 4 representatives from the national networks. Then the new FNN committee members were elected.
The Central Committee composed of the 18 representatives from the provinces and national networks were elected with the following officers: President – Mr. Chouk Vannoth; 1st Vice-President – Mr. Chhay Savon; and, 2nd Vice-President – Ms. Khuon Sey.
The Executive Committee of FNN, on the other hand, were elected with the following officers: Chief – Mr. Keo Sokha; 1st Vice-Chief – Mr. Uon Sophal; 2nd Vice-Chief – Ms. Kuch Samunch; Treasurer – Mr. Prak Leak; Internal Controller – Mr. Tep Saren; Conflict Solving – Mr. Chan Sothea; and, Secretary – Ms. San Vansoy.
The GA lasted until 8:00PM, but the results have been satisfactory for the members, and all the activities were carried out as planned.
