The Tani Sakti Alam Kerinci (TAKTIK) is a farmers’ organization in Kerinci Regency, Jambi Province, Indonesia whose members are involved in cinnamon farming. Eighty percent (80%) of Indonesia’s cinnamon is produced by Kerinci Regency. Cinnamon bark takes a long time–8 years–before it can be harvested, thus, TAKTIK is advocating for intercropping it with other crops using organic farming methods. Aside from its sustainability and being environment-friendly, natural farming methods also increase the selling price of cinnamon. TAKTIK is certified organic (they use organic fertilizers), which meets the European Union and the United States Department of Agriculture organic standards issued by the International Certification Agency, Control Union.
TAKTIK has collaborated with the NGO Rikolto Indonesia since 2013, local government, central government, as well as with Aliansi Petani Indonesia (API) in implementing mentoring programs for farmers. These programs include organizational management, management regeneration, and organic cultivation in field schools. Some of the activities were supported by the MTCP2-AFOSP program, which was co-financed by the European Union (EU) and International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
Being a contributor to the cinnamon supply in Indonesia, TAKTIK is keen on encouraging farmers to continue to innovate. Aside from advocating intercropping using organic methods, the organization also encourages its members to take organic certification for their production for them to be able to fetch a higher price for their products.
In 2015, the organization also succeeded in legalizing the cinnamon patent by winning the Geographical Indication (IG) certification award which was facilitated by the Jambi Province Plantation Office. In 2019, TAKTIK also received an award from the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture.
In 2019, TAKTIK has sold cinnamon bark thrice Tripper, a Europe-based company. Tripper processes the cinnamon bark into powder, which is then sold to Verstagen Spices, a retailer that markets to Europe and the United States.
