I’m Pandu, a 28-year-old farmer from the metropolitan city of Jakarta. My unstoppable desire to be a farmer has motivated me to practice farming in some villages in Java using different growing techniques in the last five years. My current activities include being a farm consultant, making formulas for growing crops, and gardening in my backyard.

There are plenty of challenges that are faced by millennial farmers nowadays such as climate change, lack of access to technology, lack of access to water, lack of access to market, market instability, lack of new generation of farmers, and lack of access to land. Just a very little percentage of millennials has land ownership.

To solve the problem of lack of new generation of farmers, food security in the pandemic era, unemployment, and waste and environmental issues, I strongly recommend a policy that provides access to unutilized land to be cultivated by the unemployed and teenagers to produce their own food. All we need is space. Our experience in building a collective garden powered by local resources shows that when this policy recommendation is granted, the issues will be solved holistically.
