The Philippines is taking steps toward a more coordinated national approach to agroecological transition, as Philippine members of the Agroecology Coalition (AE) met with leaders of the Department of Agriculture to discuss how agroecology can be strengthened in national policies and practice.
The consultation, organized by the Agroecology Coalition in Quezon City, Philippines on 7 July 2026, brought together Philippine-based members of the Coalition and key leaders from the Philippines’ Department of Agriculture (DA). The meeting was held following a request from AE Executive Director Oliver Oliveros and provided an opportunity for civil society and farmers’ organizations to share perspectives on the country’s transition toward more sustainable and resilient food systems.
The Asian Farmers’ Association (AFA) was represented by Secretary General Esther Penunia, together with Eli of Agricooph, highlighting the important role of farmers’ organizations in shaping the country’s agroecological transition.
The discussion with DA Undersecretary Navarro and other key agriculture department leaders focused on strengthening a common understanding of agroecology and identifying practical ways to move from principles to action.
A key outcome of the meeting was agreement on a clear set of next steps. These include aligning the government’s understanding of agroecology, mapping a national agroecological transition pathway, and identifying concrete areas for collaboration among government, farmers’ organizations, civil society, and other stakeholders.
