“We did not know much about the situation of farmers before, but after this internship in AFA, we now understand the problems that they are facing and how farmers’ organizations like AFA are working to help improve their condition.”

This was one of the insights by Samuel Reddy and Jyothirmai Paritala, 2 MA students from India’s International Institute of Planning and Management, who were in the Philippines recently to work as interns in AFA’s secretariat office.

The internship program was made possible through AFA’s partnership with AIESEC, an international student organization, which has a local chapter in the Philippines.

AIESEC representatives visited AFA earlier this year to present its internship program, where applicants from its pool of AIESEC members worldwide get a chance to apply in AFA to fill its human resource needs.

After a successful matching of applicants and the internship need, Kimleye Ng, AIESEC Vice-President for Incoming Exchange in the Philippines, facilitated the travel of the 2 students from India.

During their 6-week stay in AFA, Reddy and Paritala helped with the research for AFA’s issue paper on the financial crisis and how it affects farmers and the agriculture sector in Asia.

In their final day in AFA, Reddy and Paritala made a presentation on the situation of farmers and agriculture in India as well as their internship experience in AFA.

The 2 students will go back to their country to finish their studies, as well as help introduce AFA to other farmers organizations in India.
