UNCCD COP17 Side Event
Bridging Economic Viability, Sustainability, and Food Security through Farmer-Led Land Stewardship
24 August | 10:30 – 12:00 | MET-07

Background

While global climate and land conventions like the UNCCD set agendas, farmer organizations often arrive at these international tables with fragmented messaging, regionally distinct language, culture, context and competing priorities. To maximize the impact of agricultural farming communities in global decision-making and unlock dedicated financing for smallholders, farmer representatives must find common ground among themselves. This interactive 90-minute roundtable serves as a strategic alignment space for regional farmer leaders and global network representatives, including the World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO),World Rural Forum (WRF), East African Farmers Federation (EAFF), Asian Farmers’ Association (AFA), UNEP, IUCN, and the UNCCD CSO Panel. Grounded in the Agriculture Triangle (economic viability, soil sustainability, and regional food security), participants will unpack how diverse farmer network scan bridge regional differences, harmonize standardize core demands, and build a unified advocacy strategy. By aligning language and priorities across continents, the session aims to transform diverse agricultural perspectives into an irresistible collective force.

Objectives

  • Harmonize Core Demands: Identify key areas of convergence across regional farmer organizations to build a shared agenda for international land and climate negotiations.
  • Unify Advocacy Language: Develop a common language and narrative among farmer representatives that bridges regional nuances while articulating clear, non-negotiable priorities for smallholder support and financing.
  • Strengthen Cross-Regional Alliances: Foster strategic cooperation and peer-to-peer solidarity between farmer networks from different continents to present a united front in global decision-making spaces
