I am Bùi Van Duyên, 30 years old, from Binh Lu commune, Tam Duong district, Lai Chau province, Vietnam. I am writing this letter to present some problems that local farmers are facing.
Binh Lu commune has four ethnic groups with more than 5,000 people. The people do mainly cultivation. However, in recent years, climate change has had a strong impact on agriculture. The most obvious impact is the reduction of arable land, droughts, and pests, putting great pressure on the development of the farming industry.
On behalf of farmers in the commune, I would like to propose some solutions:
-
Conduct long-term research to know the type of cultivation suitable to the soil and to come up with solutions on how to protect production against pests and diseases when the weather is getting more and more severe.
-
Research and develop new plant varieties to adapt to climate change.
-
Improve the capacity of local staff on methods and skills to pilot and replicate climate change adaptation models and solutions.
