I am Tan A Nghi, 30 years old, from Ho Thau commune, Tam Duong district, Lai Chau province, Vietnam. I am writing this letter to present to you a difficult problem that local farmers are facing.

Currently, many farming households have boldly changed the crop structure to improve productivity. Previously, farmers let seed from year to year to produce, so the cost was not much but the yield was low. Nowadays, farmers use varieties with high yields, but the cost is higher. To produce paddy, the cost includes buying rice seed, Van Dien phosphate fertilizer, other fertilizer, Kaly, plant protection medicine, and labor wage.

To produce 100 bangs of paddy, farmers need to pay for the following:

100 kilograms rice seed x VND 120,000 / kilogram = VND 12,000,000
600 kg Van Dien phosphat fertilizer x VND 4,000 / kg = VND 2,400,000 VND
200 kg fertilizer x VND 8,000 /kg = VND 1,600,000
100 kg x Kaly x VND 9,000/kg = VND 900,000
Wage = VND 10,000,000

In total, the cost to produce 100 bags of paddy is VND 28 million. Farmers can hardly produce this huge amount so they must borrow from the banks with high interest rates. After harvesting, the profit they earn is only enough to feed their families. If the crop fails, they will be hungry.

From the above situation, I would like to suggest some solutions:

  • Implement preferential policies for farmers in production with interest rates lower than or equal to those for poor households.
  • Create a link between production and consumption so that farmers feel secure when producing.
  • Implement strict sanctions against those who produce and trade low quality products of unknown origin

We hope that Minister will implement policies and solutions to help farmers overcome the current difficulties and achieve economic efficiency on the land they were born. I will try to learn and improve my knowledge so that I can enrich my family through farming and help other farmers escape from poverty and get rich on their own land.
