Co-management of Rangelands and Conservation of Territories of life by local communities: IYRP processes and challenges

Background
The International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists 2026 was and continuing as important processes to influence the global narrative of pastoralism and rangelands conservation. It has already a benefits to recognize the pastoralists, as custodians of territories, and rangelands, with the complex of socio-economic-ecological –cultural issues for co-management in addressing biodiversity loss, climate change, land degradation/desertification and food insecurity.
According to the specifics of pastureland, as common resources, the Community -based co-management play a key role in institutionalizing rangeland management with enabling equal participation of l community members and other stakeholders in decision making and implementation for sustainable use of pastures and conservation of biodiversity to meet objectives of IYRP.
Local communities are evolving due to above complexities, however equal and meaningful participation of herders on the conservation of their territories of life, surrounding landscapes need reasonable rangeland use tenure systems on co-management. It should be accepted by all stakeholders horizontally , as well as national decision making bodies and multi-sectoral management issues in vertically.
Therefore, this Side event at UNCCD COP17 serve as platform for the exchange of experiences, highlighting issues globally, as well as proposing future directions for sustainable management of rangelands, and conservation of territories by involving pastoralists themselves, as well as national and local decision makers, researchers, NGO’s, international institutions and donors, particularly from ICCA Consortium and International Land Coalition Asia.
Objectives
The side event will build on the cases from Territories of Life of local communities and PastoralGroups and associations to address sustainable management of rangelands and biodiversity conservation that are tackling this issue. The side event intends to
- To exchange experiences and showcase of case study and research results about howcommunity-based co-management options can influence for sustainable management ofrangelands and conservation of territories at local communities and improve pastorallivelihoods
- To disseminate local pastoral communities’ voices and raise awareness nationally, internationally and globally with future development of collaboration on dissemination of IYRP processes and results of community based co-management of rangelands and pastoralism in both Mongolian, English and Chinese languages
