The International Land Coalition (ILC), together with Mongolia’s General Authority for Land Administration, Geodesy and Cartography (GALAGC) and the National Land Coalition of Mongolia, officially launched “The Right to Movement: Measuring Pastoralist Land Tenure Security in Mongolia.”
The event presented the first-ever results of a new global framework for measuring pastoralist land tenure security, applied for the first time in Mongolia through a unique government–civil society partnership. The initiative engaged nearly 900 herders and land officers across all 21 aimags, providing valuable insights into the realities of pastoralist land tenure.
The findings highlighted important gaps between legal recognition and herders’ lived experiences of land tenure security, while presenting concrete recommendations and joint commitments to strengthen pastoralist land governance in Mongolia and beyond.
The Asian Farmers’ Association (AFA) delegation attending UNCCD COP17 participated in the event. As a member of the International Land Coalition (ILC), AFA continues to support efforts that advance the rights, voices, and land tenure security of family farmers and pastoralist communities across the region.
