Across Asia, millions of smallholder farmers feed their communities, yet many face challenges in accessing markets, financing, and fair prices for their products. By organizing into cooperatives and enterprises, farmers are transforming these challenges into opportunities for growth, resilience, and prosperity.

Through the APFP-FO4A, smallholder farmers have strengthened their organizations, expanded market access, added value to their products, and built sustainable agricultural enterprises. With training, mentoring, business financing, and institutional support, farmers are moving beyond subsistence farming toward profitable and professionally managed enterprises.

The program has supported more than 100 Farmers’ Organizations with business financing, helping fund 160 approved agri-business enterprises.

Beyond financing, APFP-FO4A has helped Farmers’ Organizations strengthen governance, improve business and financial management systems, and transform into legally recognized cooperatives and enterprise entities. These improvements have increased their credibility and opened doors to stronger partnerships with governments, buyers, and the private sector.

The power of cooperatives lies in collective action. When farmers organize, they gain stronger bargaining power, greater market opportunities, and a collective voice that can influence policies and shape the future of agriculture.

The Asia-Pacific Farmers’ Program (APFP) – Farmers’ Organizations for Asia (FO4A) was implemented by the Asian Farmers’ Association for Sustainable Rural Development (AFA) and La Via Campesina (LVC), with funding from the European Union (EU) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). The program aimed to strengthen the capacities of farmers’ organizations to provide economic services, advocate for enabling policies, and promote sustainable livelihoods for small-scale family farmers across Asia.
