UNFCCC SB64 PRESS CONFERENCE
World’s smallholders call for finance action amid El Niño threat
When: 14:30 – 15:00, CET, Tuesday 16th June 2026
Where: Bonn – Nairobi 4 Main Building, Entrance Level
Farmers’ organization leaders representing 95 million smallholders across Latin America, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific warn that a climate-fuelled El Niño, combined with the ongoing fuel and fertilizer crisis, risks spiraling food prices and hunger. Therefore, creating a Farmers’ Resiliency and Empowerment Fund to secure more climate finance for agriculture focuses on smallholders, where it can have the greatest impact and is increasingly important. Family farms produce half the world’s food calories, as well as globally important commodities such as cocoa, coffee and rice, yet receive just 0.36% of the funding needed to adapt.
Panelists:
- Esther Penunia, Secretary General, Asian Farmers’ Association for Sustainable Rural Development (AFA)
- Stephen Muchiri, CEO, Eastern Africa Farmers Federation (EAFF)
- Thomas Cooper Patriota, Head of International Affairs, Ministry of Development and Family Farming, Brazil
Moderator: Ali Raza Rizvi, Director, Global Climate Change & Energy Transition Team, IUCN
